Sean Carroll provides a dégustation of recent literature on expanding space, including one work from the proprietors of this blog; the post seems to have been provoked by this recent diatribe on the subject. I am hopeful that the attention the subject is receiving might lead to it being treated as more than an issue of semantics, though. Carroll eagerly imagines scientists with perfectly-formed mental images groping for the means of expressing them, from which I dissent; the inadequacy of those means frequently cripples the development of our understanding. To say that we all understand and just struggle to talk about it clearly doesn’t amount to very compelling picture of consensus.
And remember: if the title of the paper is a question, the answer is always no.
